The Tradesman knock up four wins to go top of table

THE Tradesman are the early leaders in the Plymouth City Super League and are one of two teams with an unbeaten record after four weeks, including a win over last season’s runners-up.

In their most recent success, they defeated Ker St Social Club 10-1 to move to the top of the table and had Paul Bowen putting in a good performance, aided by a 15-darter, before going on to take his singles in three straight legs.

Plympton Cons A are the only other undefeated side and in a 6-5 victory, inflicted on Octagon their first defeat.

Dave Collins (100x12) was a 3-1 singles winner while Lee Hellings top scored for Octagon with 11 throws of a ton or more including two maximums.

Maritime A restricted Kings Arms to just a single point and had Neil White (100x14) as their leading marksman while Maritime B won by the same margin when entertaining Victoria, with Keelan Kay taking out a 13-darter in a 3-0 singles success.

Ships Tavern won for the first time when they defeated Compton 6-5, but they were 5-0 up before Geoff Norman began the Compton revival with a 3-0 victory, aided by a leg in 15.

Lee Doncaster (100x13) caught the eye in Plympton Cons’ 8-3 win against Blulebird but the visitors had some consolation when Glenn Halford (100x12) threw the week’s top finish of 121.

The Staddy came from behind to take the last two singles which enabled them to inflict on Porters their first defeat of the campaign by a 6-5 margin.

A good mark for the season’s top finish was set in week three when Neil Reid checked out at the first time of asking from 157, inspiring The Tradesman to an 8-3 victory at Ship’s Tavern.

The hosts had Dave Johns (above) giving a good account of himself though and posted a top average of 30.06 when winning 3-0 in 20, 17 and 13.

Octagon Social Club won 8-3 away at Maritime A in a high-scoring fixture that produced 121 throws of a ton or more.

Neil White (100x17) top scored for the winners with Lee Hellings (100x14) replying for the visitors.

Maritime B had to come from behind to prevail by the odd game of 11 at Bluebird and won the last two singles through Shaun Dring and Mark Gilbery, both winning without dropping a leg.

Glenn Halford (100x20) put in a good performance for Bluebird and won 3-2, aided by a leg in 15 and was well supported by Steve Harris (100x13).

Another big checkout was achieved in week two when Dave Hall (below) finished from 154, a feat that inspired Octagon to a 9-2 win over Cherry Tree.

Kelvin Rowe (100x13) top scored for Plympton Cons A in their 11-0 drubbing of Compton while The Tradesman showed their intentions when beating The Staddy 7-4, despite a good showing from Marc Cresswell.

The Staddy thrower top scored with 16 ton plus throws, which included a brace of 180s and he notched a 14-darter before going on to win his singles over five legs.

Maritime A were the biggest winners in week one when they overcame Compton with the loss of just a single point.

Neil White (100x16) was their talisman and emerged a 3-0 singles winner with his best legs being achieved in 15 and 17.

Octagon won 9-2 away at Maritime C and had Lee Helling winning 3-1 in 17, 17 and 16.

Alfie Ford threw the opening week’s top checkout with a kill of 116 while other notable outshots over the first four weeks of the season were achieved by: Shaun Dring (152), Simon Kelly (126), Andy Hawes (120), Paul Tackle (120), Brian Bibik (118), Ray Palmer (117), Lee Hellings (115), Bob Woods (114, 100), Dave Johns (107), Mike Beard (107), Fred Goldsmith (106), Steve Hiscox (106), Paul Bowen (101), Warren Gordon (100), Steve Duke (100).
