Stevenson edged out by Wade despite showing good form in the latter stages

AN INDIFFERENT start cost Simon Stevenson a place in the quarter-finals of the Ladbrokes World Series of Darts and he was subsequently edged out by the No.5 seed James Wade at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow, last night.

Wade was the quickest out of the blocks and hit maximums in the first two legs which he won in 14 and 13 before going 3-0 up with victory in 19.

Stevenson pulled one back in 19 and then started to show his “A” game when he closed the gap to one with a win in 15, scoring 356 points with his last nine darts.

Another maximum from Wade helped him to move 4-2 in front with victory in 14, followed by the next in 15, to see the 34-year-old Aldershot marksman lead 5-2 and just one leg away from a place in the quarter-finals.

EDGED OUT: Simon Stevenson who lost by the narrowest of margins against James Wade.

A top score of 180 from the Mirrorman helped him take the eighth leg in 17, followed by a win in 14 before levelling with a brilliant leg in 11, Stevenson winning the last three games with a three-dart average of 107.38.

These two had only met twice before on the PDC circuit and both had a victory to their name by a 6-5 margin which was again the scoreline when Wade secured the deciding leg in 17 to progress.

Stevenson said afterwards: “I am very disappointed. I felt good but there was nothing there in the beginning. He was there for the taking but had the experience to close it out”.

Stevenson finished with a 92.67 average and had the better checkout stats of 42%, hitting five doubles from 12 attempts compared to Wade's six from 19.

The Plymothian earned himself prizemoney of £7,500 but sadly this tournament does not count towards the PDC Order of Merit ranking.

Stevenson must now get over his disappointment quickly and prepare for the bwin Grand Slam of Darts qualifier at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, Wigan, on Monday, when eight places will be up for grabs.

Should the Mirrorman be successful he would be one of 24 PDC players to go into the hat with eight BDO marksmen to contest the round robin tournament between November 11-19 at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
