Super Mann Leads Octagon To Victory
John Mann heard scores of a ton or more called no fewer than sixteen times during Octagon's 10-1 win at Victory in the Plymouth City Super League Division A.
Mann's total was propped up by a 101 checkout that was the highest in the game whilst teammates Neil White and Lee Hellings were also prominent.
White found scores of more than a ton on eleven occasions whilst Hellings was a ten ton hitter for the reigning champions.
Mann and Quinton Taylor paired in a 19 dart 601 leg in the doubles which was the only effort to better a 22 darter over the same distance by White and his partner Fred Goldsmith.
In the individual phase, Mann (26.84) added a 15 dart leg to a fine 3-0 success whilst both of the 180s came in the final singles rubber between Alfie Ford and Phil Hoskin.
There was one maximum a piece in that matchup as Hoskin got his team's only point of the contest in a 3-2 win over Ford.
Antony Hayman was at his imperious best as he plundered fifteen ton plusses in a 7-4 win for King Billy against visitors from Oreston, Kings Arms B.
The cherries on top of Hayman's tally were two of the five maximums added to the scoreboard between the two sides.
Hayman's teammate Paul Palmer hit his team's other 180 on his way to eleven tons whilst Paul Carpenter and Tony Gordon were the players from the opposition to hear '180' called after throwing.
Gordon's maximum ticked his ton total over to ten, but that wasn't anywhere near as impressive as teammate Martyn Down's mammoth fourteen ton haul in the defeat.
Down was unlucky to lose to an inspired Hayman 3-2 in the singles with a 17 darter from the former Devon and Cornwall star proving to be crucial.
That effort from Hayman was only bettered on the night by Carpenter who nailed a 16 darter in one of six games decided by a single leg in a close fought battle between two talented outfits.
A Dave Roberts twelve ton salvo provided the firepower to push Fawn A over the line to a 6-5 win against Bluebird B.
Roberts was one of two 180 hitters in the match as Wayne Oddie provided the defeated side's only three treble visit during a topsy turvy affair that went all the way down to the last leg played.
Roberts' 101 checkout in his 3-2 win was only bettered on the night by his opponent Jon Parsons' 135 single visit in one of the two legs he won.
Parsons mammoth checkout might have not been good enough to take the win for his side, but it did claim the prize for the best finish across both divisions.
Phil Taylor and George Beckett's inspired form for Steampacket helped stall Legends Lounge's final chances at challenging for the league title as the pair hit eleven tons each in a 7-4 defeat for their side.
Taylor's maximum was one of five rained down on the board by the twelve marksmen on display with the other four coming from players from the victors.
Mark Shears joined Paul Gavican, Dan Brazier and Scott Wapshott in putting a 180 onto the result sheet, but that will provide little solace for more dropped points.
Beckett's modest by his elevated standards - but still respectable nevertheless - 81 checkout gave him the highest finish of the contest.
Bluebird A were 8-3 winners away at Saltram thanks in no small part to the contribution of Glenn Austin who found a 180 on his way to eleven three figure scores.
Austin was well supported throughout the contest by the wily veteran Tony Teal who continues to show the form that has made him so formidable over the years with ten tons of his own.
A third player to reach the ten ton mark for the victors was Lee Roberts who seems to have found a purple patch in recent weeks.
In Division B, the form of Simon Stevenson continues to push Cornwall Gate to the league title as his fifteen tons gave the St Budeaux outfit the ammunition to claim a 9-2 win at Hyde Park.
Stevenson was supported well by Matt Vosper and Andy Malinowski who added twelve and eleven tons a piece to the party.
Ben Welsh was one of two singles winners for the Peverell side with a 74 checkout and 16 darter proving crucial in a 3-1 triumph.
That checkout was only bettered in the match by Stevenson's 76 kill in his 3-0 individual success that kept up his record as the only unbeaten player across both leagues.
Aaron Wright was once again the talisman for Victoria with fourteen tons in a 7-4 home win over Kings Tamerton.
Included in amongst that total was a 102 checkout whilst teammate Mick Bingham matched Lee Hunter's maximum for the defeated team.
Tex Pearce and Harry McGregor both added maximums for St Levans who ran out 10-1 winners in their visit to Duchy B.
Pearce's three treble visit was one of twelve tons his put onto the scoreboard personally in a decent outing for both himself personally, and for the Keyham side.
Clifton's lofty second place in the league owes a lot to the form of Wayne Town who was once again bang at it with eleven tons in a 6-5 win for the Greenbank side at Cherry Tree B.
Town's teammate Kev Seal also starred with ten tons whilst Paul Hoare was a ten ton hitter for the defeated team.
Seal's tally contained a 110 checkout that was both the best of the match and week overall in the second tier; narrowly beating a 101 from Logan Carroll in his 3-0 success.
Town's 3-1 win in the individual phase of play contained the best leg of 501 in the fixture as he finished one of the trio he won in just 18 darts.
Ker St's 9-2 win at Kings Arms A was lit up by the form of Ian Heggie who notched ten scores of a ton or more for the visitors.
Heggie's teammate Roger Bailey heard 'game shot' called after putting away 76 whilst Pete Down provided the host's only moment of magic with a maximum.
Fawn B are probably the biggest benefactors from the two league format as they made it ten wins from sixteen starts with a 7-4 win over Duchy A.
Matt Anderson's 80 checkout and an 18 darter by Mark Sargeant in his 3-0 win did the damage whilst Ryan Ring continued his spate of good form with a maximum for the defeated side.
