High standards evident again in Tuesday 501 League

THE high standards that are normally attributed to the Porters Function Room 501 Top 20 League were evident in only the second week of the new campaign when the nine fixtures produced 14 ton plus checkouts.

Darren Collis recorded the week’s highest with a mark of 164 to bring Victory Inn A back on level terms with Kings Arms at 5-5, only for Tony Gordon to edge out Tony Tasker 3-2 and inflict on the Honicknowle side their first defeat.

England Youth captain Keelan Kay (pictured) caught the eye when he top scored with 12 three-figure throws which included a brace of 180s and he emerged a 3-1 winner in the singles in 13, 17 and 21 (29.04).

Last year’s champions Porters Patriots are the early tabletoppers after inflicting an 11-0 whitewash on Maritime Nutters.

They put 60 ton plus throws on the scoreboard with Andy Bates (100x14) and Malcolm Johns (100x14) leading the charge and won all six singles without dropping a leg.

Frankie Stout (100x12) gave a good account of himself as Maritime Misfits defeated The Office 9-2 while his Devon Youth team-mate, Jordan Grimshaw caught the eye in Brewery Tap’ 8-3 win at Fawn A when top-scoring with 11 three-figure throws which included two 180s.

Maritime Musketeers opened their account when winning 8-3 away at The Falstaff and had Peter Holland (100x16) emerging a 3-2 singles winner, aided by a 15-darter which he finished with a kill of 156.

Phil Evans was also on target with a brace of maximums in a 3-0 singles win.

Paul Tackle (100x14) was prominent throughout for Octagon Social Club in their whitewash of The Clifton while in a much closer encounter, Torpoint Cons edged out Victory Inn B 6-5.

Maritime Governors defeated Porters Pretenders 8-3 and had Scott Hutchinson emerging a 3-0 winner with his best legs being won in 15 and 17.

Marc Webber was another player to record a brace of 180s but he finished up on the wrong side of a 7-4 scoreline when Cherry Tree were defeated by Fawn B.
