Plymouth players inspire Cornwall to victory

AFTER losing their opening fixture of the British Inter County Championships by the narrowest of margins against Surrey, Cornwall turned around their fortunes and returned from Wales with a morale-boosting victory after defeating Gwent 21-15.

The Cornwall side were inspired by good showings from the Duchy’s three Plymouth players who all produced award winning performances.

24-CARAT GOLD: Fred Goldsmith was one of three Plymouth-based players to win match awards in Cornwall's victory away to Gwent in division one of the British Inter County Championships.

Teresa Brookshaw (20.29) forced the draw when winning the sixth set of the Ladies’ B fixture, taking the fourth and decisive leg in 18 with a checkout of 96 which earned her the lady-of-the-match award.

The Men’s B side also had to settle for a share of the spoils when they were held to a 6-6 draw, boosted by a man-of-the-match performance from Fred Goldsmith (25.66).

The Plymouth marksman battled hard for a 3-2 victory which he won in 21, 14 and 19, aided by an outshot of 100.

Cornwall edged in front 13-11 after a 4-2 victory from the Ladies’ A side before taking the match honours when Cornwall Men’s A won 8-4.

Amongst the Duchy winners was their man-of-the-match John Mann (28.23) who, aided by a brace of maximums, emerged a 4-0 winner in 16, 20, 17 and 18.
